This job is open to consultant psychiatrists eager to secure a post in a beautiful part of western Australia in late 2022 or within the first half of 2023. The salary package in 2022 goes up to $461k depending on your years of experience as a consultant psychiatrist. It includes tax free employer paid pension contributions, $28k professional development allowance etc. The contract hours are 40hrs per week with little expectation to go over this. And if you do, you get well reimbursed!
*Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist
This mental health service is in a regional setting yet it is just 1hr 30mins South of Perth's southern suburbs. Here, you will provide care and clinical management of child and adolescent patients. Primarily you will provide clinical services to Bunbury CAMHS service as well as Busselton.
The South West region is renowned for its rich agricultural and its world famous wine growing Margaret River region. The coastline is spectacular. There is an excellent school in Bunbury with a distinguished track record of success. Perth is easily accessible to either go to the WACA to watch the cricket, or fly out to Bali, London, Middle Eastern Hubs, Singapore etc. or the rest of Australia. Average house prices are $674k in Bunbury compared to $921k in Perth.
Mental health illness and substance abuse in Western Australia are the second highest cause of disease burden in the state after cancer (3rd highest in Australia). The West Australian government has committed to a 4 step strategy for mental health services so they are best placed to prevent, care for and manage mental health illness in the state, its regional cities and communities. The steps are:
Step 1 : Delivering contemporary mental health and substance use disorder services
Step 2 : Developing and maintaining a sustainable and skilled workforce.
Step 3 : Innovating mental health care through technology, partnerships and research.
Step 4 : Developing leadership, culture and governance
To this end, they require the services of a consultant child and adolescent psychiatry with experience in both inpatient and community settings. For each setting your responsibilities will include meeting targets in relation to the rate of follow up to patients within 7 days in community settings, rates of readmission to wards within 28 days and so on. Further, you will work very closely with the manager to lead, manage and direct the community team in line with the service's strategy and WA legislation (mental health act 2014 for example). Clinically, you will work in a MDT, take responsibility for clinical care and assess, diagnose and manage patients (with their carers and families) and their associated co-morbid physical disorders, and psycho-social needs. Working closely with colleagues and external stakeholders such as GPs, NGOs, community groups etc. regarding patient management and discharge plans. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:
*assisting with new referrals - including emergencies and supporting the consultation liaison service.
*work with the clinical director on clinical governance issues etc.
*participate in the on-call roster and provide cover when required.
Selection criteria includes but is not limited to:
- FRANZCP or equivalent.
- Applicants who do not have FRANZCP and have completed their specialist training in Ireland, UK, NZ, USA, Canada, South Africa or Sri Lanka (if Sri Lankan trained you must have completed your international placement in Australia or NZ) will be highly regarded by RANZCP assessment.
- RANZCP also requires at least 2.5yrs FTE consultant work experience (at time of reading this) after CCT/board certification etc.
- 6 month post in your training in Child and Adolescent psychiatry to satisfy RANZCP requirements.
- Broad experience in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
- Ability to provide leadership in a MDT.
- Strong stakeholder management skills - ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships.
- An understanding of recovery orientated and patient centred care.
- Willingness to teach undergrad & postgrad students.
- Experienced in supervising and mentoring DiTs.
