Your new intensive care unit

Alice Springs Hospital is home to a 10-bed Intensive Care Unit. It treats over 600 patients per year, and is approved for six months of accredited training by all relevant medical colleges.

70% of the patients are Aboriginal Australians with complex undifferentiated pathology, including a high rate of infection, renal disease, diabetes, rheumatic and ischaemic heart disease, bronchiectasis, and alcohol misuse. 90% of admissions are emergent with little post-op elective work. The caseload is therefore very different from many other comparable ICUs.. 

It is a great teaching environment as your trainees, junior doctors and nurses get exposed to a larger variety of cases and technical problems to solve than they would in metropolitan hospitals. 

There are 4 consultants in the unit. 

 

 

Your new adventure

Alice Springs Hospital is run by the Central Australian Health Service. The service covers a huge and amazing region - over a million square kilometres of the Northern Territory as well as some of the border fringes of South and Western Australia. 

60% of the population live in Alice Springs.  The rest live in remote communities and on outstations, cattle stations, police stations, road houses, mine and exploration sites, and in and around Yulara/Uluru.

Job scope

Manage all aspects of the day-to-day activities of the ICU, ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and quality of services. 

Ensure first class, safe inpatient services in Intensive Care.

Initiate and partake in quality management activities, performance appraisal, personal and internal continuing education programs. 

Supervise and ensure the effective running of teaching programs for junior medical staff, including advanced trainees and medical students.

Undertake audit, research and other clinical governance activities. 

Provide advice to the Director of Medical and Clinical Services on matters relating to policy and strategy development. 

Lead from the front in respect to ethical medical practices and as a senior role model in the hospital. 

 

 

Selection criteria includes: 

FCICM or equivalent.

An interest in Aboriginal Australian health and culture. 

Experience in working in cross-cultural environments.

First class communication skills.

Experience in supervision and administration relevant to your experience and qualifications.
