Mount Isa Hospital, is the main referral hub for the North West Hospital and Health Service and serves a vast area of 300,000 square kilometers.

 

The hospital and service provides care to patients across the region, many of whom are First Nations people, and are committed to delivering culturally safe and high-quality healthcare. The hospital and health service works closely with sub-specialty specialists and use innovative models to ensure that even those in the most remote areas receive the care they need.

As the Director of Medicine, you’ll oversee a dynamic medical team responsible for a variety of services, including:

 

  • Specialist outreach clinics (Nephrology, Cardiology, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Respiratory, and Gastroenterology) delivered through a mix of onsite and telehealth care.
  • A 22-bed medical ward, a 10-chair renal unit, a 6-chair cancer care unit, and a 5-bed ICU.
  • Outreach services to remote communities, especially for Nephrology and Cardiology.
  • Collaborating with other health services to ensure seamless care across the region.

 

Your Responsibilities:

In this role, you will lead and manage the delivery of medical services at Mount Isa Hospital and other facilities, ensuring first-class patient care. Your key duties will include:

 

  • Overseeing multidisciplinary teams and fostering the development of junior doctors and trainees.
  • Ensuring compliance with clinical governance, safety, and quality standards.
  • Managing budgets, workforce planning, and contributing to the hospital’s strategic and health equity goals.
  • Leading clinical service development and improvement initiatives.
  • Supporting research and teaching, with an opportunity to shape the general medicine research portfolio.
  • Promoting culturally responsive care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

 

Selection criteria

 

We seek a highly experienced physician who must have FRACP with sound leadership skills and a passion for delivering excellent clinical care. You should be able to:

 

  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues across disciplines and specialties.
  • Manage resources responsibly while maintaining a focus on patient safety and care quality.
  • Lead change and foster innovation in healthcare delivery.
  • Promote education, research, and professional development within the team.

 

Applicants with dual Fellowship in another specialty will be highly regarded.
