The Canberra Health mental health service delivers mental health, forensic  and alcohol and drug services to children, adolescents, adults and older people across the Australian Capital Territory. Care is provided across inpatient units, community centres, forensic facilities and in the home, spanning inpatient psychiatric care, community outreach and harm minimisation programs.

Specifically, CAMHS provides specialist inpatient and community-based assessment and treatment for children and adolescents with medium to severe mental illness, significant functional impairment, and complex needs. Within CAMHS there are:

About the role

A  commitment to recovery-focused, person-centred care is very important.

You will provide first class psychiatric care as well as supervise and teach psychiatry trainees and medical students, whilst taking a lead clinical role across multidisciplinary teams. Further, you will define recovery plans, work closely with corrections, courts, GPs, community agencies and other stakeholders whilst contributing to service development projects and initiatives. 

The mental health service in Canberra has established research links with ANU, the University of Canberra and the Australian Catholic University, and you may be considered for a conjoint academic appointment, subject to conditions. The mental health service based out of Geraldton, Western Australia is recruiting a Director of Clinical Services. This role combines senior leadership, clinical governance, and strategic oversight across an established and well-resourced service. Here, you will have the opportunity to:

Your Role

This regional mental health service is recruiting Consultant Psychiatrists in this context to join its established adult mental health service in Albany, Western Australia.

This is a sensational opportunity to work within a supportive, multidisciplinary regional service delivering care across both community and inpatient settings. The adult psychiatry component includes a 16-bed authorised inpatient unit, with four PICU beds, co-located with the Community service hub.

The Adult Community Mental Health Service includes the Acute Assessment & Treatment Team and the longer-term Continuing Treatment Team. Each team is supported by a psychiatrist, at least one registrar, a resident medical officer, experienced nurses, Aboriginal mental health workers, lived experience workers and allied health professionals.

You will deliver comprehensive clinical assessments and provide psychiatric care and treatment for adults in either the community or inpatient setting. Caseloads and on-call requirements are extremely manageable, offering an excellent balance between clinical responsibility and lifestyle.

The Consultation Liaison context covers referrals from the general medical, surgical and maternity wards, working closely with the palliative care team, including in the hospice.

Inpatient service

The Inpatient Unit (Ward 5A) is the 20 bed tier-4 State-Wide Service offering inpatient mental health care for young people up to 16 years old. You will be supported by a full Multidisciplinary team and junior doctors. Up to 3 psychiatrists share responsibility for the patients.

Remember, the ESP is already available for GP, Psychiatry, Anaesthesia, and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. If you’ve read my blog about the ESP you’ll know the introduction of it has been controversial to say the least. A number of the relevant medical colleges very publicly criticised the MBA and thestrategy around ESP introduction. While it offers a faster route, this new ESP is also independent of Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

Pros: It is a cheaper, faster and less hassle free route to starting work in Australia. 

Cons: The ESP doesn’t automatically lead to the FRACP qualification. To gain Fellowship, you most likely still need to undergo a separate college assessment to RACP, after you start work.

Getting fellowship in this context (FRACP) is the full equivalence. It allows you to do locum and private work (with caveats).

So what are the qualification and training requirements?

General Medicine (UK Trained Only).

Currently, the ESP for General Medicine is restricted to UK-trained specialists (CCT , not CESR).

Core Requirements:

• MRCP (UK)
• CCT in General Internal Medicine

Eligible Training Timelines:

Aug 2007 – Present: Stand-alone General Internal Medicine (JRCPTB GIM / IM Stage 1 & 2).

Aug 2019 – Present: GIM within an approved Dual CCT pairing.

Please note:This pathway is for General Medicine only. If you intend to also practice in a sub-specialty (e.g., Cardiology, Geriatrics), you must use the traditional RACP Specialist Recognition route for the sub-specialty.

General Paediatrics (UK & Ireland)

Unlike General Medicine, the General Paediatrics ESP is open to both UK and Irish-trained specialists.

• Specialist Training (SAT) under the RCPI Faculty of Paediatrics.

General Medicine (UK Trained Only).

Currently, the ESP for General Medicine is restricted to UK-trained specialists (CCT , not CESR).

Core Requirements:

• MRCP (UK)
• CCT in General Internal Medicine

Eligible Training Timelines:

Aug 2007 – Present: Stand-alone General Internal Medicine (JRCPTB GIM / IM Stage 1 & 2).

Aug 2009 – Present: Dual Training in GIM + Acute Internal Medicine.

Aug 2019 – Present: GIM within an approved Dual CCT pairing.

Please note:This pathway is for General Medicine only. If you intend to also practice in a sub-specialty (e.g., Cardiology, Geriatrics), you must use the traditional RACP Specialist Recognition route for the sub-specialty.

General Paediatrics (UK & Ireland)

Unlike General Medicine, the General Paediatrics ESP is open to both UK and Irish-trained specialists.

Specialists trained in Ireland.

• MRCPI in Paediatrics (July 2010 or later).
• CSCST in Paediatrics.
• Specialist Training (SAT) under the RCPI Faculty of Paediatrics.

Specialists trained in the UK.

• MRCPCH (August 2007 or later).
• CCT in Paediatrics (issued by PMETB pre-2010 or GMC post-2010).
• Completion of any recognized RCPCH curriculum.

All General Paediatric specialists must also demonstrate recent experience in general paeds, a valid Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) certification and completion of an Australian child protection course.

Selection criteria

• FRANZCP or equivalent gained in UK (CCT) to satisfy RANZCP accelerated or ESP pathways.
• Applicants already assessed by RANZCP (substantially comparable) or ESP will be highly regarded.
• Specialist qualifications in child and adolescent psychiatry.
• Ability to provide clinical leadership.
• Capability to provide undergrad and postgraduate teaching and supervision. 
• First class communication skills. 
• Ability to foster, develop and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships.
