Consultant Anaesthetist

 

  • Salary package up to $534k (from July 2026) depending on number years of consultant experience. Generous leave.

Job scope:

 

As the consultant anaesthetist, you will be at the centre of perioperative and emergency care, providing safe, high-quality anaesthetic services across a broad clinical spectrum, including managing pre-operative assessment, deliver both general and regional anaesthesia (including spinal, epidural and nerve blocks) and complex airway management.

 

Key responsibilities include:

 

  • Supporting acute and post-operative pain management.
  • Delivering obstetric anaesthesia, including labour epidurals and emergency caesarean cover.
  • Contributing to trauma response and hospital-wide resuscitation.
  • Championing patient safety and efficient theatre workflow across a diverse surgical caseload.
  • Managing clinical administration.
  • Education - teaching, supervising and mentoring DiT and other medical staff.
  • Liaising with specialty colleagues and relevant stakeholders.
  • Ensure your professional development is kept up to date and encourages others in this respect.
  • Willingness to initiate and participate in clinical governance activities. 

 

You will join a highly skilled, collaborative perioperative team and play an active role in clinical governance, quality improvement initiatives, and the supervision of registrars, RMOs and interns.

 

Working in a regional setting, your anaesthetic expertise will have a significant, far-reaching impact — managing a varied case mix, responding to high-acuity presentations, and strengthening care across both the hospital and the broader Midwest region. The new ICU will provide a platform for dual qualified anaesthetists and ICU specialists to shape regional critical care.

Selection criteria 

 

  • FANZCA or recognised specialist equivalent such as eligibility for ESP/ANZCA bridging pathway.
  • extensive experience in hospital based anaesthesia. 
  • Leadership experience in a MDT context.
  • Commitment to clinical education and teaching.
  • Experience in quality improvement activities.
