  • John Hunter Hospital is a Level 6 tertiary referral trauma and teaching hospital – the largest in this region of NSW.
  • The hospital features modern operating theatres and dedicated suites for specialised procedures, including interventional radiology and endoscopy. The John Hunter Hospital Innovation Precinct, scheduled for 2026, will further strengthen research, education and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

The department provides comprehensive anaesthetic care across cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, paediatrics (including neonatal), obstetrics and gynaecology, trauma, general surgery and orthopaedics, as well as high-risk perioperative medicine. Services span elective, urgent and emergency cases, reflecting the hospital’s status as a tertiary referral and major trauma centre.

This investment will

  • Deliver enhanced and expanded facilities with a new seven-storey acute services building 
  • Deliver a new Emergency Department to meet a projected future demand of over 95,000 presentations per annum 
  • Double the capacity of the Intensive Care Unit and provide capacity for future expansion 
  • Provide 22 operating theatres and nine (9) interventional suites to respond to significantly increasing demand 
  • Deliver five procedure rooms for endoscopy and minor procedures 
  • Provide purpose-built flexible education space co-located within clinical services. 

 

 

Selection critieria

 

  • FANZCA or Expedited Specialist Pathway eligible candidates (UK, FRCA). 
  • Recent and comprehensive experience in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine.
  • Evidence to support good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Evidence of previous teaching experience at various levels.
  • An understanding of clinical governance and experience of clinical audit.
  • Interest in research with publications and presentation(s) at National/International meetings and so on.
