Consultant Gastroenterologist (FRACP)

Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service delivers healthcare across the Fraser Coast, Bundaberg and surrounding rural communities, supporting a population of more than 225,000 people. An opportunity is available for a Staff Specialist Gastroenterologist to join the Department of Internal Medicine.

 

The gastroenterology service currently operates with specialist nursing support and well-established endoscopy and outpatient services. You would be working across Hervey Bay and Maryborough Hospitals, providing gastroenterology care while also helping to further develop the service across the region.

 

This role offers a great opportunity to join a supportive multidisciplinary medical team while contributing to the ongoing growth of gastroenterology services within the health service.

 

Your Role

  • Provide specialist gastroenterology services including inpatient care, outpatient clinics, consultations and endoscopic procedures.
  • Undertake patient assessments, diagnostic workups and procedural management within your scope of gastroenterology practice.
  • Work closely with physicians, surgeons, nursing staff and allied health teams to ensure coordinated and high-quality patient care.
  • Support the supervision and teaching of registrars, resident medical officers, interns and medical students.
  • Contribute to service development, quality improvement initiatives and clinical governance activities.
  • Maintain clear communication with patients, families and referring clinicians to support continuity of care.

 

 

Remuneration package highlights

  • Total remuneration package of up to $548k per year, depending on experience and classification. This will increase to up to $571k from July 2027. The package includes:
  • Motor Vehicle allowance $23-$28k depending on salary band - paid.
  • 3.6 weeks professional development leave. 
  • $22k professional development allowance - paid.
  • Very generous salary sacrifice arrangements
  • Employer paid tax free pension contributions - 12.75%
  • Opportunity to undertake private practice at St Stephens Private Hospital in Hervey Bay, allowing you to complement your public hospital role with private work.

Selection criteria

  • Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP).
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with AHPRA.
  • Experience working in gastroenterology including endoscopy and colonoscopy.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary clinical team.
  • Commitment to teaching and supporting junior doctors.
  • Strong communication and clinical decision-making skills.
