  • Leading remuneration package of up to $466k plus on-call and other allowances. 
  • Includes car allowance of up to $25k paid upfront.

  • Post in adult psychiatry and forensic psychiatry.
  • Ratio of consultant to registrar 1:1.

The forensic service here is made up of the Prison Mental Health Service, Court Liaison Service in addtion to to a Forensic Liaison Officer. There is a 900 person correctional facility for adult males in the region but female prisoners and juveniles are incarcerated in either Brisbane or Townsville further up the coast. 
 

This Queensland mental health service  provides specialist mental health, substance and alcohol related care to a catchment population of approx 250k. It is  accredited by the college for training through to FRANZCP including accreditation for advanced training. It also has a close relationship with the University of Queensland School of Medicine with access to its library, database and research hubs as well as medical school training completed locally.  

 

 

There are excellent incentives on offer in respect to continuing professional development provided by both Queensland Health and the college. The service and clinical director really do encourage opportunities for research and academic progression and for staff to progress in their specialty interests. Adult psychiatrists are encouraged to rotate through inpatient, acute and community services to enhance the clinical experience and their areas of interest, with research and teaching also actively supported and encouraged. 

 

 

The MHS is made up of the following:
2 FTE C&A psychiatrists.
1 FTE Old Age Psychiatrist
1 FTE Addiction Psychiatry
2 FTE Forensic Psychiatry 
10 FTE General Adult Psychiatrists

 and 1 Senior Registrar, 16 Registrars, 3 PHO, 1 Senior House Officer and 2 Interns. There are also 2 Nurse Practitioners.

Job scope includes

  • Provide expert, culturally safe specialist psychiatry services across the continuum of inpatient, prison, police custody facilities, court and community settings.
  • Manage patients under forensic orders, including those who are high risk and/or comple, managed under the Mental Health Act or as voluntary consumers.
  • Provide reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals and the courts.
  • Provide leadership in respect to clinical governance activities. 
  • Implement and undertake teaching and educational activities.
  • Implement and monitor quality standards, OH&S policy.
  • Develop and put in place systems and strategies to ensure effective governance. 
  • Ensure you liaise effectively with other colleagues and departments as well as external stakeholders. 
  • Participate in the on-call roster as required.

 


Selection criteria

  • FRANZCP or trained overseas in either NZ, UK, Ireland, South Africa, USA or Canada. If trained in Sri Lanka you must have completed your international placement in Aus/NZ.
  • Ideally further quals or endorsement in forensic psychiatry or significant experience in. 
  • Extensive skills in facilitating effective mental health care across Forensic settings, prison, court, police custody, inpatient and community settings and in multidisciplinary settings.
  • If trained outside of Australia you will have at least 2.5yrs consultant experience at time of reading this text.
  • If trained outside of Australia you will have completed a formal post in C&A of at least 6 months.
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
