Package - up to $477k + oncall depending on 1-9 years experience at consultant level.

 

 

The Mental Health Service provides a range of specialist community, in-patient and call centre based mental health services for people living in the South West region of Western Australia. It currently delivers an array of Programs inclusive (but not limited to) the following:

 

  • Acute Psychiatric inpatient unit with:
    • 23 low dependency beds
    • 7 high dependency beds
  • Regional Consultation Liaison service based in Bunbury hospital
  • Community Mental Health Clinics located in Bunbury, Busselton, Margaret River, Bridgetown, Manjimup.
    • Infant, Child and Adolescent (0-16)
    • Youth (16-18)
    • Adult (18-65)
    • Older Adult (65+)
  • Step-up Step-down Unit in Partnership with Richmond Wellbeing
  • Youth Severe Services, in partnership with WA Primary Health Alliance
  • Community Assessment and Support Team (CAST)
  • Mental Health Co-Response team in partnership with the WA Police (WAPOL)
  • Specialised Aboriginal Mental Health Services
  • Alcohol and Drug support services
  • Western Australia Eating Disorder consultation service

 

 

Mental health illness and substance abuse in Western Australia are the second highest cause of disease burden in the state after cancer (3rd highest in Australia). The West Australian government has committed to a 4 step strategy for mental health services so they are best placed to prevent, care for and manage mental health illness in the state, its regional cities and communities. The steps are:

 

Step 1 : Delivering contemporary mental health and substance use disorder services

Step 2 : Developing and maintaining a sustainable and skilled workforce.

Step 3 : Innovating mental health care through technology, partnerships and research.

Step 4 : Developing leadership, culture and governance

 

 

 

 

 

The department require the services of a consultant child and adolescent psychiatry with experience in both inpatient and community settings. For each setting your responsibilities will include meeting targets in relation to the rate of follow up to patients within 7 days in community settings, rates of readmission to wards within 28 days and so on. Further, you will work very closely with the manager to lead, manage and direct the community team in line with the service's strategy and WA legislation (mental health act 2014 for example). Clinically, you will work in a MDT, take responsibility for clinical care and assess, diagnose and manage patients (with their carers and families) and their associated co-morbid physical disorders, and psycho-social needs. Working closely with colleagues and external stakeholders such as GPs, NGOs, community groups etc. regarding patient management and discharge plans. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

*assisting with new referrals - including emergencies and supporting the consultation liaison service. 

*work with the clinical director on clinical governance issues etc.

*participate in the on-call roster and provide cover when required. 

 

 

 

 

 

Selection criteria includes but is not limited to:

 

  • FRANZCP or equivalent.
  • Applicants who do not have FRANZCP and have completed their specialist training in Ireland, UK, NZ, USA, Canada, South Africa or Sri Lanka (if Sri Lankan trained you must have completed your international placement in Australia or NZ) will be highly regarded by RANZCP assessment.
  • Broad experience in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. 
  • Ability to provide leadership in a MDT.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills - ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships. 
  • An understanding of recovery orientated and patient centred care.
  • Willingness to teach undergrad & postgrad students.
  • Experienced in supervising and mentoring DiTs.
