The CAMHS is comprehensive child and youth mental health service. It covers community, inpatient, outreach, forensic, early intervention, and therapeutic support. The service includes a Adolescent Inpatient Unit and Day Service, a Acute Mobile Youth Outreach Service, a Young Peoples Early Intervention Team, a regional Adolescent Forensic Mental Health Service, special program Therapeutic Support Service, and the Early Psychosis Integrated Care service.

 

The t currently has six FTE consultant psychiatrists (Staff Specialists) and five registrars, giving a staffing base that supports genuine clinical collaboration and manageable on-call load.


Day-to-day the role involves comprehensive psychiatric assessment, case management, therapy, and group work across the service's teams, with clinical leadership responsibilities including the supervision and training of registrars and junior medical staff. You will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, participate in quality improvement and clinical audit, and engage with the after-hours on-call roster.


Townsville University Hospital is the largest tertiary hospital in northern Australia and the principal referral centre for the 700,000 people living between Mackay and the Torres Strait.

Selection criteria includes but is not limited to:

 

  • FRANZCP or eligibility for the accelerated RANZCP pathway for ESP Specialist Pathway or RANZCP specialist assessment with substantial comparability assessment concluded—contact us for guidance.
  • Experience in child and youth psychiatry.
  • Culturally competent care and cross-cultural communication skills.
  • Track record of leadership, innovation, clinical governance, and teaching.
  • Knowledge of contemporary child, adolescent, and youth psychiatric practices
  • Evidence of appropriate expertise in the skills of a consultant psychiatrist.
  • Achievements as a clinical leader and innovator.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary teams and across service boundaries, liaising with other mental health colleagues, teams as well as other specialties. 
  • Willingness to participate in teaching and education initiatives as well as supervising medical staff
