This mental health service includes community services at various hospitals and clinics across the region.
The service is made up of the following:
18.5 FTE Consultant positions, comprising 1.8 FTE Old Age, 2 FTE Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, 2 FTE Addiction Psychiatrists, 2 FTE Prison and Court Liaison Services, 0.1 FTE CTS, and 10.4 FTE General Adult Psychiatrists, as well as 25 FTE Junior Medical Officers (1 Senior Registrar, 16 Registrars, 3 PHOs, 1 Senior House Officer, and 2 Interns). There are also 2 Nurse Practitioners in the CQMHAODS.
On-call
Junior Medical Officers are rostered as first on-call. The JMO on-call frequency is 1 in 17/18. Consultants are rostered as second on-call at a frequency of 1 in 12. Over the weekend, the consultant on call conducts ward reviews on Saturday.
This mental health service provides specialist mental health, substance, and alcohol-related care to a catchment population of approximately 250k. It is accredited by the College for training through to FRANZCP, including accreditation for advanced training, and has a close relationship with the University of Queensland School of Medicine, with access to its library, databases, and research hubs, as well as medical school training completed locally.
There are excellent incentives on offer in respect of continuing professional development, provided by both Queensland Health and the College. The Service and Clinical Director actively encourage opportunities for research, academic progression, and the development of specialist interests.

Job scope
- Provide expert, high-quality, culturally safe specialist forensic psychiatry services
- Provide leadership in clinical governance activities
- Implement and undertake teaching and educational activities
- Implement and monitor quality standards and OH&S policy
- Develop and implement systems and strategies to ensure effective governance
- Liaise effectively with colleagues, departments, and external stakeholders
- Participate in the on-call roster as required
Selection criteria
- FRANZCP, or trained in the UK to satisfy ESP and RANZCP accelerated pathways
- Alternatively, psychiatrists trained in Ireland or applicants already assessed on the RANZCP SIMG pathway as substantially comparable will be highly considered
- Specialist qualifications in forensic psychiatry
- Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment
- First-class verbal and written communication skills
