The provision of mental health services here is provided as one service on multiple sites. In order to meet service needs the Specialist may be required to provide clinical services at any facility within the broader service. The Forensic Mental Health Service is based in the central business district. It is made up of the Prison Mental Health Service and the Court Liaison Service along with the assistance of a Forensic Liaison Officer. There is an adult male prison for 900 inmates providing correctional services to the region. Female prisoners and juveniles are incarcerated elsewhere under different jurisdiction.

Overall, this mental health service  provides specialist mental health, substance and alcohol related care to a catchment population of approx 250k. It is accredited by RANZCP for training through to FRANZCP including accreditation for advanced training and has a close relationship with the University of Queensland School of Medicine with access to its library, database and research hubs as well as medical school training completed locally.  

There are excellent incentives on offer in respect to continuing professional development provided by both Queensland Health and the college. The service and clinical director really do encourage opportunities for research and academic progression and for staff to progress in their specialty interests. Consultants in General Adult psychiatry are encouraged to rotate through inpatient, acute and community services to enhance the clinical experience and their areas of interest, with research and teaching also actively supported and encouraged. 



The service is made up of the following:

  • 2 FTE C&A psychiatrists.
  • 1 FTE Old Age Psychiatrist
  • 1 FTE Addiction Psychiatry
  • 2 FTE Forensic Psychiatry 
  • 10 FTE General Adult Psychiatrists

 and 1 Senior Registrar, 16 Registrars, 3 PHO, 1 Senior House Officer and 2 Interns. There are also 2 Nurse Practitioners.

Job scope

  • Facilitate effective mental health care across Forensic Mental Health - Prison, Court, Watch House inpatient and community settings and within a MDT environment.
  • Provide leadership in respect to clinical governance activities. 
  • Implement and undertake teaching and educational activities.
  • Implement and monitor quality standards, OH&S policy.
  • Develop and put in place systems and strategies to ensure effective governance. 
  • Ensure you liaise effectively with other colleagues and departments as well as external stakeholders. 
  • Participate in the on-call roster as required.


Selection criteria

  • FRANZCP or trained overseas in either NZ, UK, Ireland, South Africa, USA or Canada. If trained in Sri Lanka you must have completed at least 2 yrs of your international placement in Aus/NZ.
  • If trained outside of Australia you will have at least 2.5yrs consultant experience at time of reading this text.
  • If trained outside of Australia you will have completed a formal post in C&A of at least 6 months.
  • Significant experience in forensic psychiatry.
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • First class verbal and written communication skills.
