Opportunity:
The Intensive Care Unit at this major regional hospital provides vital critical care services for Rockhampton and its surrounding catchment area, including Gladstone, Emerald, Biloela, and Longreach. As a regional referral centre, the ICU supports a diverse caseload of adult and paediatric patients, with approximately 450 to 650 annual admissions. This includes 60 to 100 paediatric cases each year, offering clinicians the opportunity to work across a broad spectrum of critical care presentations in a dynamic and supportive environment.
The Intensive Care Unit is a modern, state-of-the-art facility currently operating 10 beds, with infrastructure in place to expand capacity to 14 beds. The department is led by a committed team comprising a Director, Deputy Director, 3.5 FTE Staff Specialists, 2 Senior Registrars, 6 Registrars, and 1 Junior House Officer.
As a high-acuity regional unit, it delivers care across a broad and complex case mix—including trauma, acute medical conditions, oncology, surgical, and paediatric patients. The team works in a dynamic and collaborative environment that provides excellent exposure to a wide spectrum of critical care presentations, making it an ideal setting for clinicians seeking both professional challenge and development.
The role involves the provision of high-quality clinical services within the Intensive Care Unit, contributing to the delivery of comprehensive and patient-centred care. The successful candidate will also be actively involved in the education and training of medical staff, students, nursing staff, allied health professionals, and community groups with an interest in critical care.
Engagement in patient safety initiatives, clinical audits, research projects, and service planning is expected, supporting the ongoing development and excellence of the department. Additionally, the position requires assisting the Director of the Intensive Care Unit in the day-to-day operations and clinical leadership of the service.
As part of the Central Queensland Hospital and Health Service (CQHHS), the role may involve providing services across multiple sites within the region. Clinical duties will align with the capabilities of each facility to ensure a coordinated and flexible approach to critical care delivery across the district.
