As a specialist in consultation liaison psychiatry you will work in a MDT setting delivering general hospital psychiatry consultations.

 

The MDT is a diverse team of senior clinicians, each with a specialty role in the mental health service. It includes the Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Team, which provides a mental health service to all treatment areas of the Townsville Hospital, as well as Dual Diagnosis Coordinators, Multicultural Mental Health Coordinator, Perinatal Mental Health Coordinator, Mental Health Intervention / Intellectual Disability Coordinator, Neuropsychology, Primary Care Liaison Officer and Specialist Clinics, which work across the service.

 


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

 

  • Providing psychiatric intervention, direct clinical care and treatment to clients and their families with a mental illness to all treatment areas of Townsville Hospital.
  • Perform psychiatric and somatic assessments including comprehensive risk assessments of patients of the THHS with psychiatric, emotional, and behavioural disturbances. 
  • Planning of interventions, liaison with family and professionals involved in patients care and coordinating other somatic treatment as required.
  • Guiding multi-disciplinary teams with a focus on recovery.
  • Provide consultation to other departments within the hospital and health service.
  • Initiating and participating in quality improvement, risk management, peer review and audits 
  • Supporting and / or undertaking research including the obtaining of research funding where possible.  
  • Actively supporting and undertaking teaching of undergrad, postgrad clinical staff and others. 
  • Participate in the on-call roster.

 

 

Selection criteria:

 

  • FRANZCP or associate FRANZCP or equivalent gained in either UK, NZ, Ireland, South Africa, USA, Canada. Applicants trained in Sri Lanka who have completed 2 years of their training in Australia are also eligible to apply.
  • Experience in liaison psychiatry as a consultant.
  • Willingness to participate in clinical governance activities.
  • Willingness to teach undergrad, postgrad and others. 
  • Demonstrating understanding and commitment to the principles of hospital and mental health service risk, safety and quality management.
  • Willingness to support or participate in research projects.
  • Willingness to participate in the on-call roster. 

 

 

Townsville is popular location for overseas trained specialists. The lifestyle is easy, laid back and focused on good living. Townsville is a great place to raise kids. It is peaceful and has one of Queensland's finest private schools. It is so easy to get around as well. The commute is a breeze. In town you can choose to live by the beach with all the cafes, restaurants etc. or instead choose a family home by the river, near the hospital where many consultant families are based. Townsville has an excellent university - JCU - which has a first class reputation in science and medicine. 

 

 

The new Queensland Health consultant wage agreement (MOCA 6) guarantees you:

 

  • base salary  depending on your experience as a consultant plus
  • private practice allowance 50%
  • car allowance $21k - $25k plus
  • CPD allowance $21k paid with your salary plus
  • on-call allowances, overtime allowances and penalty shifts plus
  • employer paid pension contributions. 
  • Long service leave etc.
