Psychiatrist Opportunities in Perth, Western Australia.
This major mental health service in Perth presents interesting opportunities for consultant psychiatrists with different sub-specialty interests.
Jobs sit within a mental health division that has undergone significant modernisation. A purpose-built Mental Health Emergency Centre opened in 2019, followed by a new 12-bed acute unit in 2022 designed specifically for complex presentations. This isn't about managing outdated facilities or making do with converted spaces. There has been significant investment in mental health services and facilities.
This part of Perth continues to expand, with population growth driving service development rather than budget constraints limiting opportunities. These recent facility investments demonstrate organisational commitment to modern psychiatric practice rather than maintaining legacy systems.
Further, wage agreements have increased year on year. For example, in September 2025 packages are up to $514k + oncallls then will be increasing to $534k + oncalls etc. from September 2026.
The main tertiary site handles Perth's most complex cases, including comprehensive consultation-liaison work across surgical and medical wards. This isn't peripheral psychiatry work but integral to the hospital's functioning as an important major city facility. The emergency department operates at tertiary level, meaning presentations arrive with genuine complexity requiring immediate psychiatric assessment and intervention.
THere is a more suburban service whichy focuses on rehabilitation and longer-term care, offering the chance to see patients through extended recovery journeys.
Three community teams serve distinctly different populations across the eastern suburbs. Rather than generic community psychiatry, each team has developed expertise matching their local demographics and needs. One team operates from a purpose-built centre, another focuses on older adult work, while the third handles a majority of the adult presentations across different diverse suburban communities.
The service includes several state-wide programmes that extend reach well beyond typical catchment boundaries. E.g. The State Aboriginal Mental Health Service, Mobile Community Outreach Team, and Mental Health Emergency Response Line operate from these bases but serve patients across Western Australia. This brings exposure to a variety of cases and populations rarely encountered in standard metropolitan practice.
A separate general hospital serves three local government areas with 30+ adult beds plus high-dependency units. This operation runs differently from the main service, with two distinct community teams handling different aspects of care. The Assessment and Treatment Team manages all initial referrals, while the Clinical Treatment Team provides ongoing care. Both teams maintain full multidisciplinary staffing including dedicated psychology and social work support.
Perth's suburbs offer significant lifestyle advantages including access to excellent private schools, parks and other amenities. Some of these suburbs provide genuine community experiences while maintaining proximity to Perth's CBD, beaches and airport.Housing costs remain reasonable compared to Sydney and Melbourne, while Western Australia's economic stability supports long-term planning.
