By 2031 the population of this vibrant and multicultural part of Sydney is expected to grow by a third. Its population of people aged 65 years or older is expected to increase substantially by 74%. Approx. 11,000 people in this region have dementia. Around 20,000 people are expected to have dementia in 2031.

 

After English, the most common languages spoken in this part of Sydney are Arabic, Vietnamese and Cantonese.

 

 

A new OPU unit is being constructed as part of the mental health hospital redevelopment. The unit is being funded under the state government’s $700 million SWMHIP and will help to address the increasing needs of the region's ageing population.  There are 3.0 FTE consultant vacancies as services expand to meet the growing needs of the community.

 

The centre will operate alongside the general acute MHU, promote consistent good practice in the older age MHS, help to support appropriate care with new patient consult rooms, office space, internal and external communal patient areas, special nurses stations. 

 

As a clinician your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

 

  • Providing first class care to patients ensuring appropriate assessment, diagnosis and ongoing care whilst providing effective leadership to a multidisciplinary team. 
  • Initiating and participating in quality improvement and clinical governance activities.
  • Taking part in teaching and supervision of JMOs and SMOs. 
  • Ensuring your CME requirements are met. 
  • Participating in on-call roster as required. 

 

 

Selection criteria:

 

  • FRANZCP or equivalent specialist training completed in either the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada, NZ, South Africa.
  • Demonstrated current clinical practice within old age psychiatry of a high standard and ability to adapt clinical practice  according to contemporary evidence based best practice.
  • Ability or experience in working in busy multi-cultural environments. 
  • Ability to work within the requirements of large public health organisations.
  • First class communication and collaborative skills with colleagues and with patients, carers and families.
