Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry

  • Location: Rockhampton, Queensland.
  • Package: Up to $534k plus oncall and other allowances. 
  • Oncall: 1 in 13/14.

This mental health service includes community services at various hospitals and clinics across the region.

 

 

The service is made up of the following:

 

18.5 FTE Consultant positions made up of 1.8 FTE Old Age, 2 FTE Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, 2 FTE Addiction Psychiatrists, 2 FTE Prison and Court Liaison Services, 0.1 FTE CTS and 10.4 FTE General Adult Psychiatrists) and 25 FTE Junior Medical Officers (1 Senior Registrar, 16 Registrars, 3 PHO, 1 Senior House Officer and 2 Interns). There are also 2 Nurse Practitioners in the CQMHAODS.

The Consultants have subspecialty interests including Psychiatry of Old Age, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensics, Developmental Disability, Intellectual Handicap, ABI and Addiction psychiatry. The Acute Care Team clinicians cover Emergency Presentations after hours.

 

Oncall

The Junior Medical Officer's are rostered as first on call. The JMO on-call frequency is 1 in 17/18. Consultants are rostered as second on call at a frequency of 1 in 12. Over the weekend the consultant on call conducts ward reviews on the Saturday.

 


This mental health service  provides specialist mental health, substance and alcohol related care to a catchment population of approx 250k. It is accredited by the college for training through to FRANZCP including accreditation for advanced training and has a close relationship with the University of Queensland School of Medicine with access to its library, database and research hubs as well as medical school training completed locally.  

 

 

There are excellent incentives on offer in respect to continuing professional development provided by both Queensland Health and the college. The service and clinical director really do encourage opportunities for research and academic progression and for staff to progress in their specialty interests. Consultants in General Adult psychiatry are encouraged to rotate through inpatient, acute and community services to enhance the clinical experience and their areas of interest, with research and teaching also actively supported and encouraged.

Job scope

 

 

  • Provide expert, high quality, culturally safe specialist psychiatry services in older age psychiatry in both inpatient and community settings potentially across multiple sites.
  • Provide leadership in respect to clinical governance activities. 
  • Implement and undertake teaching and educational activities.
  • Implement and monitor quality standards, OH&S policy.
  • Develop and put in place systems and strategies to ensure effective governance. 
  • Ensure you liaise effectively with other colleagues and departments as well as external stakeholders. 
  • Participate in the on-call roster as required.

 

 

Selection criteria

 

  • FRANZCP or trained in UK to satisfy ESP and RANZCP accelerated pathways.
  • If not either, trained in Ireland, USA, Canada or South Africa would also be considered.  
  • Specialist qualifications in old age psychiatry. 
  • Ability to work across Old Age inpatient and community settings and within a multidisciplinary context.
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • First class verbal and written communication skills.
