Job scope

 

The Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon will ensure surgical services provided are of the highest standard and delivered in an efficient and effective manner. The position assists with the education and supervision of surgical trainees and other medical staff, medical students, allied health, interested community groups and nursing staff.

 

 


Role highlights

Clinical

  • With the Clinical Director, contribute to, support and encourage surgical unit activities, including clinical audit.
  • Provide specialist upper limb services, elective and trauma, including shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand.
  • Work closely with hand therapy service and physiotherapists.
  • The position includes elective operating, general and specialist trauma operating, elective and fracture clinics.
  • Teaching of the AOA trainee and other junior doctors, contribution to audit, M&M and departmental research. 
  • Participate in the after-hours ‘on call’ roster.
  • Provide appropriate evidenced-based clinical care and, where necessary, delegate the provision of clinical care to patients under their name.


Education and research 

 

  • Maintain up-to-date college mandated requirements and demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development.
  • Implement and undertake teaching and educational initiatives and responsibilities within the specialty area.
  • Actively conduct, contribute to, and support research activities.

Selection criteria

 

  • FRACS or trained overseas in either NZ, UK, Ireland, South Africa, USA or Canada. 
  • Upper limb fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon.
  • Significant clinical experience and skills in Upper Limb Surgery including shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand.
  • Clinical experience and skills in  for a wide range of procedures.
  • Understanding and commitment to principles of continuous improvement and review. 
  • Ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
  • Developed leadership skills and experience in contributing as a team member in a multidisciplinary
  • approach to service provision.
  • First class verbal and written communication skills.
  • A commitment to continuing professional education.
