Mackay Hospital and Health Service delivers healthcare across an area of approximately 90,000km², with six hospitals, two multi-purpose health services and four community health centres employing more than 3,700 staff. An opportunity is now available for a Staff Specialist in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine to join the Department of Medicine at Mackay Base Hospital on a permanent full-time basis (80 hours per fortnight).
This is a substantive clinical role in one of Queensland's most modern regional referral hospitals — a facility equipped with leading-edge technology and a genuine commitment to delivering outstanding care.
Job scope
You will provide contemporary specialist respiratory and sleep services across inpatient, outpatient and consultative settings within the Mackay HHS. The role offers exposure to a broad and professionally rewarding clinical case mix, with responsibility for delivering safe, evidence-based and patient-centred care. The work is genuinely varied, clinically stimulating and professionally satisfying.
This position works collaboratively within the Department of Medicine and supports the Clinical Director in the delivery of high-quality clinical services, strategic service development and the achievement of organisational objectives.
- Provide specialist respiratory assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing management for inpatients, outpatients and referred patients across the health service.
- Undertake respiratory procedural services, including bronchoscopy and other scope of practice interventions.
- Deliver timely consultative services to medical, surgical and emergency teams to support whole-of-hospital patient flow and outcomes.
- Contribute to the development and expansion of respiratory services, including models of care and outreach services.
- Contribute to clinical governance through participation in patient safety initiatives, audits, quality improvement, accreditation and risk management activities.
- Provide professional oversight and clinical guidance to junior medical officers, registrars and multidisciplinary staff.
- Participate in teaching, supervision and mentoring of medical juniors and advanced trainees.
Here, you will join a talented group of 18 FTE physicians representing a broad range of subspecialties, including Acute Medicine, Endocrinology, Respiratory, Infectious Diseases, Medical Oncology, Neurology, Nephrology, Rheumatology, Palliative Care, and Rehab Medicine.
The department is a collaborative and supportive workplace with a strong commitment to high-quality patient care, education and professional development. The General Medicine Department is accredited by RACP for Basic Physician Training and Advanced Training in General Medicine, and works closely with Cardiology, Emergency Medicine and Intensive Care services.

Selection criteria
- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in Respiratory Medicine, or eligibility via the substantial comparability pathway — including UK/Irish CCT holders.
- Demonstrated high-level clinical skills and experience in respiratory medicine, including bronchoscopy competence.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Commitment to clinical governance, patient safety and continuous quality improvement.
- Experience in teaching, mentoring and supporting junior medical staff.
