Consultant in Youth Psychiatry, Perth, Western Australia

 

This major metropolitan mental health service in Perth Western Australia has a requirement for a Consultant in Youth Psychiatry. This exciting job involves delivering high-quality psychiatric assessment, treatment, and ongoing care for young people within a dynamic youth mental health program. Working closely with carers and families you'll provide specialist psychiatric expertise to a multidisciplinary team and play a leadership role in shaping and delivering contemporary models of care for youth mental health.

 

The mental health act and commission in Western Australia categorises youth as 16 to 24 yr olds.

  • Major metropolitan mental health service. 

 


This mental health service is WA’s largest providing Youth, Adult, Older Adult, Forensic and State-wide services in a variety of settings that include inpatient units within their hospitals, community mental health centres, day therapy and outreach programs. 20k people were treated in 2022. Their Youth Service provides care to 16-24 year olds with the following models of care:

 

  • A specialist Tier 4 mental health service providing counselling, therapy and case management to youths with significant mental health problems and barriers to accessing mainstream services (6 month intervention).
  • An intensive community outreach service delivering community-based triage, assessment and intensive short-term management for up to 12 weeks.
  • A Youth Hospital in the Home eight-bed service which provides short term intensive management for up to 14 days.
  • An early intervention service for young people presenting with ultra-high risk of psychosis and/or features of an emotionally unstable personality disorder.
  • A consultation and liaison service which provide specialist consultation, assessments, and treatment for youths with a history of complex attention and hyperactivity symptoms and co-occurring Axis 1, 2 mental health disorders.

 


Remuneration of up to $534k plus additional add ons, future loadings, including: 

 

  • An annual professional development allowance of $33k per annum.

  • 4 weeks annual leave (can accrue up to 5 weeks via oncall roster).

Essential selection criteria

 

  • FRANZCP or equivalent specialist training gained in UK to satisfy RANZCP accelerated and/or ESP pathways.
  • Specific experience and interest in providing psychiatric care to youths aged 16-24 years old. 
  • First class communication skills with demonstrated ability to lead and help your MDTs. 
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching and supervising medical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide psychiatry consultation to a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge and experience in undertaking individual therapy and family systems interventions.
  • Demonstrated interest and involvement in quality improvement processes and systems
  • Education, training and supervision experience of undergrad and postgrad colleagues and other
  • related professionals.

 

Desirable selection criteria

  • Applicants with additional qualifications in child psychiatry will be highly regarded.
  • Knowledge of contemporary issues and reform agendas facing youth mental health services.
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in research activities in relation to youth mental health.
