Bathurst is a historic, prosperous and stimulating town just 2hrs drive from Sydney. Bathurst has one of finest private schools in NSW, Scots College. It is a major agricultural centre and Charles Sturt University has a campus based there.

 

This job is with the Bathurst Hospital and Health Service, a major part of the Western NSW local health district. Your place of work is a Level 4, 120 bed acute hospital that services a rapidly growing population which has recently undergone a AUD$200m redevelopment to bring new and expanded services into this fantastic part of NSW.

 

Bathurst provides general medicine, allied health, ambulatory care, coronary care, emergency medicine (26k pa), ICU, mental health drug & alcohol, obstetrics & gynaecology, oncology, paediatrics, pathology, radiology, rehabilitation and surgery services.  The service also has an active hospital in the home program as well as primary community health services.

 

The hospital and health services have an excellent partnership with the University of Western Sydney and Charles Sturt University, conducting research and providing training opportunities for medical students.

The service is seeking a Consultant Nephrologist with an interest in general nephrology and GIM.

 

The goal of the department is as a leader in the field of Nephrology in regional Australia. You must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as being a team player, and share the same ambitions in order to succeed in achieving these goals.

 

  • Deliver best‑practice, evidence‑based clinical care consistent with training, qualifications, and experience.

  • Supervise, mentor, and educate junior medical staff and other clinicians to foster safe, high‑quality practice.

  • Utilise clinical information systems to support shared decision‑making, care planning, and accurate documentation.

  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with medical colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure quality and continuity of care.

  • Build strong relationships with community‑based providers, including GPs, to maintain patient‑centred continuity and safe transitions from hospital to community.

  • Contribute to clinical governance: participate in relevant committees and team meetings, support accreditation processes, and steward resources responsibly.

  • Maintain professional competence through ongoing CME/CPD and reflective practice.

 

Nephrology‑specific

 

  • Provide nephrology services within the approved Scope of Clinical Practice,

  • Lead the clinical and operational performance of the Renal Dialysis Unit.

  • Provide outpatient nephrology clinics as required.

  • Partner with GPs to optimise management of CKD stages 1–3 and slow disease progression through shared care, advice, and education.

 

General medicine & on‑call

 

  • Maintain contemporary general medicine skills to support inpatient and outpatient caseloads.

  • Participate equitably in the physician on‑call roster and respond to acute consultations as required.

Selection criteria.

  • FRACP or SIMG BUT SIMG applicants must have already been assessed by RACP as "Substantially comparable" or close to being assessed.
  • Dual certified in nephrology and GIM.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership.
  • Ability to communicate effectively through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to teaching, continuing education, research and quality improvement.
  • Willing to participate in an on-call roster as required and to respond on-site within a reasonable time.
