About the Opportunity
The EDs are seeking motivated and experienced Specialists in Emergency Medicine and appropriately skilled Rural Generalists with Advanced Skills in Emergency Medicine (RACGP and ACCRM Fellows) to join their thriving department on Tasmania's stunning North West Coast.
The department serves a population of approximately 116,000 across two exceptional facilities:
The North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) is a regional trauma centre with comprehensive services including ICU, general medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and mental health. The Mersey Community Hospital (MCH) is a subacute facility with general medicine and rehabilitation services.
Each department manages approximately 30,000 presentations annually, with both sites offering 24-hour pathology and on-call radiology services, plus VST telemedicine programs for acute stroke presentations.
Training & Development Excellence
Both hospitals are highly accredited training sites. NWRH is ACEM accredited for 24 months Emergency Medicine training, and both RACGP and ACRRM accredited for Advanced Skills training in Emergency Medicine. The department offers ACEM Associateship programs across Foundational, Intermediate, and Advanced levels with multiple FACEM supervisors. The facilities maintain active training programs with current trainees from all three colleges and serve as a statewide EMET program hub with outreach opportunities to remote areas including King Island and Queenstown.
The department consists of a small, inclusive team of specialists who have discovered that North West Tasmania offers the perfect blend of professional excellence and lifestyle. The diverse team brings extensive experience across multiple subspecialties including toxicology, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), paediatric emergency medicine, humanitarian medicine projects, disaster medicine, clinical research, palliative care and VAD, medical education and administration.
Your Role
As the ED Specialist, you will provide specialist emergency medical care across both hospitals, participate in quality improvement and teaching activities, and support district hospitals and rural GPs through retrieval services. You will supervise and mentor junior medical staff and medical students, contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs, develop a professional portfolio aligned with their interests and expertise, and participate in on-call rosters with specialist colleagues.

Essential Requirements
Candidates must hold specialist registration in Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or have been assessed by ACEM with your training being assessed as being "substantially comparable" to an ED specialist trained in Australia, OR be a Rural Generalist with Advanced Skills in Emergency Medicine (RACGP/ACCRM Fellowship). A current driver's licence is required along with commitment to ongoing professional development and quality improvement.
