About the Opportunity
We are working with the Tasmanian Department of Health to recruit a motivated and experienced General Medicine Consultant to join the Department of Medicine across the beautiful North West region of Tasmania.
This is an excellent opportunity to work across two key regional hospitals — the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) and Mersey Community Hospital (MCH) — situated approximately 50km apart. The region serves a population of around 116,000 and offers a well-integrated service across acute and sub-acute medicine, along with a broad spectrum of sub-specialties including:
Cardiology
Respiratory Medicine
Infectious Diseases
Gastroenterology & Hepatology
Nephrology
Endocrinology & Diabetes
Geriatric Medicine
Palliative Care
You will join a close team of physicians delivering high-quality care across the region.
The department serves a population of approximately 116,000.
The North West Regional Hospital (NWRH) is a regional trauma centre with comprehensive services including ICU, general medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, and mental health. The Mersey Community Hospital (MCH) is a subacute facility with general medicine and rehabilitation services.
Academic & Training Focus
The Department of Medicine across the 2 sites are fully accredited with the RACP for basic and advanced training in General Medicine. NWRH is a Level 1 Basic Physician Training site, with MCH supporting secondments. Both hospitals are recognised for advanced training, and have successfully hosted peer reviews for overseas-trained physicians who need RACP supervision and accreditation.
There is a strong academic connection through the University of Tasmania’s Rural Clinical School, with staff playing an active role in undergraduate teaching and postgraduate supervision.

Your Role
Generally, the successful candidate will:
- Deliver specialist General Medicine (and/or subspecialty) services
- Support and supervise junior medical staff
- Engage in teaching and research
- Contribute to hospital-wide quality and safety initiatives
- Participate in on-call rosters and multidisciplinary teams
Selection criteria
- FRACP or equivalent. SIMG applicants already assessed by RACP as being substantially comparable will be highly regarded.
- Excellent experience in acute hospital settings.
- Experience and/or interest in regional/rural healthcare.
- A commitment to professional development - yours and your colleagues.
- First class communication skills - able to build relationships with all stakeholders.
- Experience in continuous quality improvement activities.
