Medical Director and Consultant Psychiatrist - New Gold Coast Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit

  • Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
  • Senior role to provide clinical leadership to new 40 bed secure rehab unit.
  • Package of up to $580k plus oncall allowances. Includes base salary, PPA, managerial allowances, car and CPD allowances and superannuation.

Package includes managerial allowance, $22k CPD allowance, and up to $28k car allowance and private practice allowances.

This is a significant leadership role with a focus on recovery, rehabilitation, complex mental health, addiction issues and safe, effective, patient-centred clinical practice.

The new 40-bed secure rehab unit has been developed to provide compassionate, person-centred mental healthcare for consumers with complex mental health and addiction needs. Its model is built around recovery, rehabilitation, family and carer involvement, and the belief that people can live meaningful and connected lives beyond illness.

The role

The Medical Director will provide clinical care to patients and day-to-day clinical management of the multidisciplinary patient care team.

You will also provide professional leadership to the unit, contribute to service planning and commissioning, and support the development of clinical procedures, medical workforce programs, recruitment, onboarding and contemporary models of care.

This is a hands-on leadership role rather than a purely administrative one. You will be expected to remain clinically involved, support consultant input for consumers from the start of treatment, and ensure timely senior review for complex or high-risk presentations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing specialist psychiatric leadership in secure mental health rehabilitation.
  • Leading clinical care within a multidisciplinary, patient and family-centred model.
  • Supporting the commissioning and ongoing development of the new unit.
  • Developing and reviewing models of care to ensure contemporary practice.
  • Providing clinical governance, quality and safety leadership.
  • Supporting audit, peer review, risk management, morbidity and mortality review, and quality improvement.
  • Supervising, mentoring and developing consultants, registrars, PHOs, junior doctors and students.
  • Supporting the Psychiatry Training Program in line with college standards.
  • Encouraging research, innovation and research translation within the unit.
  • Working closely with the Clinical Director of Mental Health and Specialist Services.
  • Providing regular reporting to governance and management committees.
  • Helping to shape a positive, safe and recovery-focused unit culture from an early stage.

The health service

The public sector health service provides healthcare to more than 740,000 people across one of Australia’s most desirable regions.

The service covers a growing city in South East Queensland with major hospitals at Southport and Robina, strong specialist services, universities, national sporting teams, beaches, hinterland and a genuinely family-friendly lifestyle.

The new Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit is a 40-bed service designed for consumers with complex mental health and addiction issues. The philosophy is grounded in hope, optimism, recovery and connection — for consumers, families, carers and the broader community.

Selection criteria includes but is not limited to:

  • MBBS or equivalent registrable with the Medical Board of Australia.
  • FRANZCP or equivalent acceptable to the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists - please contact me for more information.
  • Advanced Training Certificates or equivalent in Rehabilitation, Addictions and/or Forensics would be very useful.
  • Experience in rehabilitation and recovery is highly desirable.
  • Strong clinical leadership experience in multidisciplinary mental health settings.
  • Experience supervising and training junior medical staff.
  • Commitment to clinical governance, quality improvement and safe patient care.
  • Ability to contribute to service development, commissioning and medical workforce planning.
  • Willingness to participate in the after-hours and on-call roster for Mental Health and Specialist Services.

This is a rare opportunity to take a senior role in a new secure rehabilitation service on the Gold Coast, with the scope to influence its clinical culture, medical leadership, workforce development and recovery-focused model of care.
