Job information

This major Sydney mental health service is appointing a Clinical Director to lead its Mental Health Intensive Care Unit which is a 12-bed psychiatric intensive care facility managing this part of Sydney's highest acuity and most complex mental health presentations.

This is a senior clinical leadership appointment. In this role, you will hold clinical governance responsibility for the PICU and direct management responsibility for senior and junior medical workforce. You will iaise and work closely with senior clinical and executive staff in the health service as well as other stakeholders to help shape and safeguard quality of care.

The PICU operates within a recovery-oriented, trauma-informed framework, providing intensive assessment and management for patients presenting with acute clinical risk, diagnostic complexity or severe symptomology that cannot be safely managed in a general acute inpatient setting.

It is a quaternary-level service within a tertiary mental health system, and the role carries the demands that come with that. You will need to balance local, Sydney-district and state-wide expectations while leading multidisciplinary teams through a genuinely complex service environment. As well as the leadership aspect, the position also includes teaching and training of undergrad and postgrads as well as allied (primary) health staff, and contribution to research projects and quality improvement activities.

Selection criteria

  • FRANZCP or specialist recognition by the Medical Board of Australia (overseas-trained specialists on substantial pathways welcome to apply; those expecting FRANZCP within 3 months will also be considered)
  • Demonstrated high performance as a senior clinician across acute, general hospital and community psychiatry.
  • Proven leadership of multidisciplinary clinical teams, including experience managing performance and workforce matters
  • A track record of working closely with medical colleagues, GPs, patients and carers within recovery and care coordination models
  • Interest in clinical governance and quality improvement, with willingness to support research activity among your colleagues.
  • Experience teaching psychiatry to medical, nursing and allied (primary) health trainees
  • Drivers licence.
