Warrnambool is a beautiful coastal regional city on Victoria’s south-west coast, at the end of the Great Ocean Road. With a population of around 31,000, it offers a relaxed, family-friendly lifestyle with beaches, whale watching, walking tracks, sports clubs, cafes, restaurants, good schools, childcare options and a Deakin University campus.
South West Healthcare is the major health service for south-west Victoria. Warrnambool Base Hospital is also undergoing a major redevelopment, with around $396 million being invested into a new multi-storey clinical services building, including an expanded emergency department, additional theatres, extra inpatient capacity, dialysis, imaging and a dedicated paediatric unit.
South West Healthcare is now developing and expanding its geriatric and rehabilitation services, creating an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic consultant who wants to help shape and grow a service. The role includes consultant-led inpatient and community geriatric medicine, including a 14-bed GEM unit, 6-bed rehabilitation unit, geriatric assessment in ED, GEM-at-home, orthogeriatric consult services, public specialist outpatient clinics, falls and balance clinics, and CDAMS clinics.

Scope of Practice
- Provide high-quality and comprehensive geriatric medicine services across inpatient and community settings.
- Deliver care across acute, subacute, rehabilitation, GEM, GEM-at-home, orthogeriatric, outpatient and community-facing services.
- Provide consultancy and liaison support to other clinicians involved in the management of geriatric patients.
- Supervise Registrars, Hospital Medical Officers and junior medical staff.
- Contribute to service development, quality improvement, clinical governance and clinical risk management.
- Support multidisciplinary working across acute, subacute, community and rehabilitation settings.
- Participate in teaching and training of medical students, junior medical staff, nursing staff and other members of the team.
- Participate in research and service improvement activities where appropriate.
Selection Criteria
- FRACP or assessed by RACP as substantially comparable or eligible for the accelerated pathway.
- Experience in contemporary geriatric medicine, rehabilitation, acute care, subacute care and multidisciplinary care.
- Commitment to quality improvement, clinical governance and service development.
- Positive attitude towards teaching, supervision and training of junior medical staff.
- Strong communication, teamwork, interpersonal, conflict management and negotiation skills.
- Commitment to interdisciplinary healthcare and patient-centred care.
- Current driver’s licence.
