
You will be based in the city of Cairns and you will provide GAP care on a week in / week out basis. On the week in you will based in Cairns and your role will be to undertake telepsychiatry reviews, participate and lead mdt meetings and get involved in teaching and education. Your week out is where the fun starts. Here you will go on outreach trips through the region and islands , overnighting in communities to run face to face clinics.
You'll play a key role in providing psychiatric care across this amazing region in a generalist psychiatry context, with exposure to a wider variety of cases. Here you will get amazing experience in Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental health, psychiatry and culture. As well as standard multidisciplinary team of remote mental health and remote clinicians such as nurses, GPs, rural generalists you will also work and liaise with the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations.

- Supporting and participating in clinical governance projects and systems.
- Provide clinical leadership within mdts and oversee collaborative care planning.
- Participate in strategic and operational planning, including quality improvement initiatives.
- Deliver education and training to junior staff, medical students, and mental health clinicians.
- Maintain professional development and be an advocate for your colleagues' professional development.
Selection criteria
- FRANZCP or eligibility for RANZCP substantial comparability or ESP with relevant GAP experience.
- A sense of adventure, adaptability and the resilience to work effectively in challenging environments.
- Strong clinical and professional skills, including communication, time management, and conflict resolution.
- Expertise in managing patients with complex mental health needs within general psychiatry in rural and remote settings.
- An interest in community engagement, service development and the education of allied health professionals
- A strong interest in culturally informed practice, Indigenous health and transcultural psychiatry
- Experience in fostering close partnerships with GPs, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
- Teaching experience for junior medical staff and other clinicians.
- Ability to gain knowledge of the Queensland Mental Health Act.
- Strong clinical documentation and patient care management skills.
- Class C motor vehicle license is essential.
